The Catholic Daughters Wish You a Blessed and Prayerful Lenten Season
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. The term “Ash Wednesday” derives from the Latin dies cinerum (day of ashes). The ashes placed on our foreheads today are the remains of palms blessed on last year’s Palm Sunday. The words our priests use when placing the ashes on us -- “Remember, man, that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return” -- are not uttered to depress or alarm us but as a reminder of the temporal nature of our earthly lives. When we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior, a perpetual light will shine upon us and life everlasting awaits us in the presence of the Lord when our earthly bodies do “return to dust.”Catholic Encyclopedia Description of Lent Message of his Holiness Benedict XVI for Lent 2008 |
